Para Vista Primary School student, Sophia Ivanica, aged 8, has taken out honours in the 2017 Credit Union Christmas Pageant Mini-Float Design Competition, beating more than 250 other designs from schools around South Australia.

The Year 2 student’s winning design entry, Snowman, has been made into a mini float which was unveiled today and will appear in the Credit Union Christmas Pageant on November 18.

Pageant Director Brian Gilbertson congratulated Sophia and all of the other students who entered the competition and said he was overwhelmed by the outstanding designs.

“Sophia’s winning design conjures up memories and a connection for us all, as even though we experience Christmas in summer, a Snowman is an iconic Christmas chracter,” he said.

“The competition provides school children around the State the chance to be a part of the magic of the Credit Union Christmas Pageant and is an exciting opportunity for students, to show off their creative talent.”

The mini float competition, which was previously held every two years, is now an annual competition from this year. The competition is open to individual students as well as class entries.

Mr Robert Keogh, Chair, Credit Union Pageant Company, said he was very proud to see that more than 1880 entries had been received in total since the competiton’s inception in 2007.

“The Credit Union Pageant Company congratulates all of the individual students and schools that entered again this year. The standard of the entries and effort put into the designs were once again exceptional and made the judge’s decision extremely tough over the judging period,” Mr Keogh said.

“Sophia’s Snowman design has been awarded the honour and privilege of having her design built to appear in this year’s Pageant, $500 donated by the credit unions and a visit to Stardust Castle to preview the mini-float with her class,” he said.

All designs in the Mini-Float Competition had to be original and could not include branded signage or characters, such as cartoon characters, or themes from movies or musicals.

A mini float is a small mobile set that is light enough to be pushed or pulled along the Pageant route.

The 2017 Credit Union Christmas Pageant is on Saturday, 18 November 2017.
