Father Christmas has arrived in Adelaide amid much fanfare, colour and fun for the start of the festive season in South Australia.

He arrived in Adelaide just this morning from the North Pole to join the Credit Union Christmas Pageant procession, in its 84th year in 2016.

Credit Union Christmas Pageant Creative Director Brian Gilbertson said the day was full of joy and fun for everyone.

“Today was once again magical. I loved the energy of all of our pageant performers, the characters were amazing,” he said.

“The audience today did not disappoint, responding with great joy.”

“Today's Pageant was not to be missed and one of the best performing Pageants I have been involved with and the finale with the Matilda cast and Father Christmas’ most beautiful message were other highlights.”

Father Christmas was also joined by some of his best friends on the new float, Father Christmas Rules, with the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Sandman all joining in the fun to celebrate the magic and wonder of the Pageant.

Father Christmas will now take up residence in the Magic Cave at David Jones until Christmas Eve, welcoming visitors every day to make their Christmas wishes.

The Nutcracker Christmas Ballet was also a new addition to the Credit Union Christmas Pageant this year.

It featured a pair of ballet dancers twirling atop the moving float, with the Nutcracker King and Queen sitting back and waving to the crowd.

There were also walking sets, bands, dancing groups and fairytale characters, entertaining the crowd as they made their way to North Terrace.

The colourful parade began at 9:30am at South Terrace with the blow of the gold whistle with 260,000 people lining the streets to see the floats roll past.
